About Pine Barrens Preserve

The Pine Barrens Preserve spans approximately one million acres across southern New Jersey, encompassing a vast expanse of sandy, acidic, and nutrient-poor soil that supports a distinctive ecosystem dominated by pitch pine and oak forests. Characterized by extensive wetlands, cranberry bogs, and clear, tea-colored streams, it is one of the most ecologically significant areas in the northeastern United States. The preserve provides critical habitat for rare and endangered species such as the Pine Barrens treefrog and the heath hen. Historically, the area was shaped by Native American use and later European settlers who harvested charcoal, timber, and cultivated cranberries. Today, the region offers numerous recreation opportunities, including hiking, mountain biking, paddling, and wildlife observation. The preserve features a network of trails passing through diverse terrain, from dense forest to open barrens, and along scenic rivers like the Batsto and Mullica. Notable landmarks within the preserve include historic villages such as Batsto Village, an 18th-century ironworks and sawmill complex, and the beautiful Whitesbog Village, known for its historic cranberry farming. Visitors are drawn to the quiet natural environment and the chance to experience this rare ecosystem. Management focuses on balancing public access with protection of its fragile habitats, making it a destination for outdoor enthusiasts, nature lovers, and conservationists alike.
